Masaryk Institute and Archives of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic jointly with the Institute of the History and Archive of the Charles University organise a workshop on the Development of historical Slavonic studies in the geopolitical transformations in Central Europe in the first half of the 20th century.

Workshop subject:

In Central Europe, historical Slavonic studies separated from philologically oriented Slavonic studies already in late nineteenth and early twentieth century. This emancipation manifested itself not only in the publication of a number of important scientific works but also in institutionalisation of this field, which nevertheless retained close links with Slavic philology. By institutionalisation we mean the establishment of separate university departments and later also independent scientific institutes (the Slavonic Institute in Prague). Due to the complicated geopolitical situation in Central Europe in late nineteenth and first half of the twentieth century, historical Slavonic studies were more than other fields of science influenced by events on the domestic and international political scene.

The aim of this workshop, organised as part of implementation of grant project GA ČR No. 18-20451S ‘Jaroslav Bidlo and Milada Paulová: Founding personalities of historical Slavonic studies in the context of development of Czech science’, is to investigate the history of Czech historical Slavonic studies in a broader context of Central Europe. We would like to cover subjects such

as the position of historical Slavonic studies with respect to closely related fields of study, teaching of historical Slavonic studies at universities, leading personalities of historical Slavonic studies, political influences and their impact on the institutional foundation of historical Slavonic studies and its overall conception, frequently and less frequently researched subjects treated by historical Slavonic studies, and international collaboration in the context of development of European historiography.
